Massage Etiquette: Tipping, Timing & First-Timer Questions
2 min readAleks, LMT
Most first-timers worry less about the massage than about doing something wrong. The good news: etiquette is simple, and a good therapist wants you comfortable. Here are the basics.
Arriving
Arrive a few minutes early, or be ready when the therapist arrives for a mobile session. Late arrivals usually shorten your session, since the next appointment follows. See our first appointment guide.
What to Wear and Undress
Undress to your comfort level. You're draped with a sheet at all times, and only the area being worked on is uncovered. Say so if you'd rather keep something on.
Speaking Up
Tell the therapist if pressure is too firm or too light, if you're cold, or if anything is uncomfortable. You can ask for a different area, or stop. Our pressure guide explains how to describe what you want. You don't need to chat; silence is fine.
Tipping
In the United States, tipping a massage therapist is common, and 15 to 20 percent is a widely used guideline for good service. Practices vary: some therapists who own their practice price tips into their rates, and some clients tip less or more. If you're unsure, ask when you book. We have no rule you must follow; tip as you feel appropriate.
Hygiene
A shower beforehand is courteous but not required. Don't worry about being sweaty after a workout; therapists are used to it.
Phones and Sounds
Silence your phone. Sighs, stomach noises, and even falling asleep are normal.
Common First-Timer Questions
Do I have to talk? No.
What if I'm ticklish or shy? Say so; the therapist will adjust.
Can I reschedule? Ask about the policy when booking.
Can I bring someone? Ask beforehand.
Is soreness normal? Mild soreness can happen; see aftercare tips.
Health Information
Be honest about injuries, pregnancy, medications, and conditions. See when not to get a massage.
Mobile Sessions
Prepare a quiet space and a clear path; see home preparation.
