What to Expect at Your First Massage Appointment

2 min readAleks, LMT

If you’ve never had a professional massage, it’s normal to feel a little unsure about what happens. This guide walks through a typical first visit, from booking to aftercare, so nothing is a surprise.

Before You Arrive

Booking is by appointment only, so there are no walk-ins and no waiting room. You’ll choose your massage type and whether you want the private studio in Westshore or a mobile visit. If you’re not sure which to pick, say so when you book. There’s no wrong answer.

Eat lightly beforehand, wear comfortable clothes, and try to arrive a few minutes early so you aren’t rushed.

The Conversation

Every session starts with a short chat. You’ll be asked about problem areas, any injuries or health concerns, and what pressure you prefer. This is your chance to mention anything you’d like avoided. Be honest here, because it shapes the whole session.

Privacy and Comfort

Most table massages are done undressed to your comfort level and covered with a sheet, with only the area being worked uncovered. Wear as much or as little as feels comfortable. The studio is private and clean, so you won’t be sharing the space with other clients.

During the Massage

Speak up whenever you want to. If the pressure is too firm or too light, if you’re cold, or if something is uncomfortable, say so. Nobody is offended by feedback, and a good session is a two-way conversation. Quiet is fine too. Many people simply relax and say nothing.

Pressure and Soreness

Pressure varies by massage type. Deep tissue is firmer, while lighter styles are gentler. Mild soreness the day after a firmer session is normal and usually fades quickly.

Aftercare

Drink water, move gently, and avoid anything strenuous right afterward if you can. If something feels wrong later, such as sharp pain that doesn’t ease, contact a doctor.
