Post-Workout Recovery Massage: Speed Up Muscle Recovery
2 min readAleks, LMT
Sore muscles after a hard workout are normal, but staying sore longer than necessary usually just means more days lost to stiffness instead of training. Recovery massage is built around shortening that window — easing tightness, improving circulation to the worked muscles, and generally helping you bounce back faster between sessions.
Why Timing Matters
Unlike sports massage before training, which focuses on warming up and preparing muscles, recovery massage is about what happens after. The general guidance is to wait a little while after intense activity, often a few hours to a day, rather than going straight from a hard workout into a firm massage, since muscles are already in a stressed state immediately afterward. A session within 24 to 48 hours tends to be the sweet spot for most people.
What It Helps With
Recovery massage is commonly used for general muscle soreness after a hard training session, tightness that builds up over a training block rather than from a single workout, and helping muscles feel ready for the next session rather than still carrying fatigue. It's not a substitute for proper rest, hydration, or nutrition, which still do most of the heavy lifting in recovery — massage is one additional tool, not a replacement for the basics.
What a Session Looks Like
Pressure is typically moderate to firm, focused on the muscle groups that did the most work, whether that's legs after a run, shoulders after swimming, or the whole body after a long training day. Sessions usually run 45 to 60 minutes. Some people prefer this done as deep tissue work if the soreness is deep and localized, while others do better with a slightly lighter touch if they're very sore all over.
Building It Into a Routine
For people training regularly, recovery massage works best as a repeated habit rather than a one-time fix, similar to the pattern described in our sports massage guide. If you're dealing with pain that goes beyond normal soreness, especially anything sharp or radiating, see our guide on massage for back pain or check with a doctor first.
