Myofascial Release Explained: Benefits for Chronic Tension

2 min readAleks, LMT

Fascia is the connective tissue that wraps around muscles, holding everything in place and letting muscles glide against each other. When it gets tight or restricted, usually from injury, poor posture, repetitive strain, or long periods of inactivity, it can create a dull, widespread tightness that doesn't always respond to standard massage. Myofascial release is built specifically to address that layer.

How It's Different From Deep Tissue

Deep tissue massage works into the muscle itself with firm, targeted pressure. Myofascial release works on the fascia surrounding the muscle, using slow, sustained pressure and gentle stretching rather than kneading or compression. The pace is much slower — a therapist might hold a stretch or light pressure on one area for a minute or more, waiting for the tissue to soften rather than working it quickly.

It's not necessarily a gentler experience, though. Some people find the sustained holds more intense in their own way than firmer, faster strokes, simply because of how long the pressure is maintained.

Who This Tends to Help

Myofascial release is often a good fit for widespread, chronic tightness that doesn't feel like one specific knot, stiffness following an old injury, or restricted movement in a joint that doesn't seem to stem from the muscle alone. If your main issue is a specific tender spot rather than general tightness, trigger point therapy is likely more direct. For general muscle tension, deep tissue massage is the more common starting point.

What a Session Looks Like

Sessions typically run 60 to 90 minutes. The therapist works slowly across the affected area, often without oil, since the technique relies on a slight grip on the skin rather than gliding over it. Expect long holds and gradual stretching rather than the steady rhythm of a relaxation massage. It pairs well with lymphatic drainage for people who want a lighter, slower session overall.
