Deep Tissue vs. Swedish Massage: What's the Difference?
2 min readAleks, LMT
These are probably the two most requested massage styles anywhere, and the names get used loosely enough that it's worth being clear about what actually separates them.
The Core Difference: Pressure and Purpose
Swedish-style massage, often just called a classic or relaxation massage, uses long, flowing strokes with light to moderate pressure. It's designed primarily to relax the whole body, improve circulation, and leave you feeling calm rather than worked on. Deep tissue massage uses slower, firmer pressure aimed at the deeper layers of muscle, designed to address specific tension rather than full-body relaxation.
Put simply: one is built to help you unwind, the other is built to work something out.
Comparing the Experience
A Swedish-style session feels light and rhythmic throughout, rarely crossing into discomfort, and tends to leave you relaxed and a little sleepy afterward. Deep tissue feels more targeted and sustained, with pressure that can be intense in tight areas, and it's not unusual to feel mild soreness the next day, similar to post-exercise soreness.
Neither is inherently "better." They're built for different outcomes, and plenty of people book one or the other depending on the week they've had — a flowing relaxation session after a stressful stretch, or deep tissue when something specific needs attention.
Which One Should You Book?
If your main goal is to de-stress, sleep better, or simply unwind, Swedish-style pressure is usually the better fit. If you're dealing with chronic back or neck tension, recovering from physical activity, or know you prefer firm pressure, deep tissue is the better starting point. If you're not sure, say so when booking — pressure can also be adjusted within a single session rather than treated as a fixed choice.
For something different from both, Thai massage combines pressure with active stretching rather than fitting neatly into either category.
